JADE's Solo Exhibition "To Take A Back Seat" — "Stairwell Project" Season 3

JADE grew up in Beijing from a young age, perhaps with the inherent unbridled spirit of a Beijinger. Around 2016, in his early twenties, he became infatuated with the graffiti that could be seen everywhere on the streets of Beijing. Influences like "Cha Tou" "Ma Gen Ma," and the rap group "Yin San Er" gave this naive young man a fierce spiritual shock, also making him a devout follower of street cultures such as Xu Ya and hip-hop. Naive, rough, underground - the streets were their playground and a studio that could be occupied at any time.

Without goals, plans, or even meaning, for a long time, he and his companions roamed the streets, spraying graffiti everywhere, like crows appearing at dusk, painting these tea-themed images that were always overlooked and never discussed because they were considered unfashionable. Therefore, although JADE is an art student from a fine arts school with solid basic skills, he never dreams of himself as an artist. His favorite graffiti artist is Andy Howell, or perhaps there was a deviation in his memory when spelling the name, but when introducing him, he would definitely say: "Don't know who Andy Howell is? Just write Andy Warhol backwards, and you can find him."

Retreating from chaos to safety, from Andy Howell to Andy Warhol. Many graffiti creators describe their work as "playing with graffiti" rather than "painting graffiti." In JADE's creations, it's hard to see any grand narratives; more often, as he says, it's just for fun. But you can see the same solace in the recurring protagonists he depicts, a group of friends who are close to him, drinking because they are down and out, and becoming even more down and out because of their drinking.
